While we were exploring the What happened on that fishing trip while you were exploring the temple they went fishing and unfortunately pappy caught a fish that was too large for him and the last he was seen was him getting pulled into the water and a giant shadow coming up from underneath blueberry why didn’t you do anything oh that’s sad blueberry just saw him get taken into the water just well also tim was there oh sorry tim yeah tim oh yeah Tom Tom. The stable guy. Yeah. You saw Pappy. Dang, that’s crazy. We left that temple like, guys, we kicked that temple’s ass. And he was like, oh yeah, Pappy’s dead. Giant fish got him. We lose more gnomes that way. God. Why does this keep happening and then Blueberry was like you want a smoothie Ah, I see your new whip. Wow. They had it, like, on a show floor in, like, a nice, cool little room. Oh, yeah. Oh, nice. Yeah, they really cleaned it up. I’m not sure how long it’ll stay that way. I mean, are you a dirty driver, or do you have, like, passengers that don’t mind messing you up? Well, my old car, there was a lot of, you know, crud in the floor, because I like to eat while I’m driving. I might just stop doing that for a while. We’re, like, almost there. We’re actually getting to the city. Yes. Oh. Aldrich died, too. Oh, no. So Drowning Wallace is a large and ancient city built of ruins built upon ruins. Ah, Chicago. It’s known for its great canals and its dark alleyways. It has been sitting underneath a dark fog that has not lifted in many weeks. Sounds like London. As you begin to approach, the fog slowly grows thicker and thicker. Okay can we get a little rerun on why We’re here for one of the connecting temples of the main vampire thing, right? There’s another creature that’s being held here. I think it was like a fiend chimera or something like that. And we’re trying to stop that from also getting released. Got you. Hopefully our wacky little side adventures didn’t distract us too much. We got wacky. Nah. So, approaching the city. On the edges, you see a building or two. And then there’s three or four, but you can I never see too far ahead or behind you. Is Drowning Wallace always like this? Has anybody been here before? I didn’t expect this place to be so cloudy. I have. Went to school here Yeah Oh yeah How that go Well I saw lots of fog but I thought it was just me When was the last time you’ve been here? It will sometimes last for days or maybe weeks, even. Oh, nice. Hey, maybe while we’re here, we might check out your old school, you know? Got any professors or teachers that you miss or maybe some cool co-students? He was Luke before we came here. Oh, well, yeah, I guess that’s true. Okay. Well, this place – do we see folks walking up and down the streets, or has it been pretty barren? It has been pretty barren. Got you. I mean I would say based on the population that might track, but it doesn’t seem like there’s anybody around really. during this time of year it is uncommon and unwise to spend too much time on the
streets. The city is known to be infested with vampires. Oh, that tracks. Infested? That sounds like a lot of vampire. Why’d you move out of Drowning Wallace? It’s just the summers are too hot and vampires, you know. Too bad Pappy’s not here to quote Lost Boys. one thing I never could stomach about Drowning Wallace all the damn vampires that was a good movie does Blueberry know about Rose Thorn yet I heard she she just disappeared she was kind of there you know let’s make sure she cannot hear us oh yeah let’s do a little rewind of what happened last time because Blueberry wasn’t here to start from last time After fighting off the undead on the outside of the temple, Blueberry, Tom, and Pappy went off fishing. That had its own misadventure Now in the temple they encountered many perilous undead and who were sealed behind a few arches. Unfortunately, the seal only kept them away from the necromancer’s chamber, and Thalen was chased out of the temple by them. A couple of them got away. And so Thalen was beaten near to death by the undead on the outside temple. And his follower attempted to rescue him and was also beaten near to death. To the point where if they hadn’t intervened magically they both would have died. But, they didn’t die, and then returning within the temple, they found a locked chamber and in those doors they found a necromancer a fiendish and wicked man who had taken over the temple and in that chamber there was a woman bound in chains that were magically sealed After some misadventures trying to get her out of the chains and defeating the necromancer, they freed this woman who revealed herself to be Rose of Morn. And in that first conversation revealing her name, she immediately decided to lie about being Thalen’s old consort. And all of us were, really? You and him. What? Oh wait, you almost forgot the part where Scorn almost killed her? I feel like we can’t gloss over that. Yeah, I apologize for that. I was watching Scorn’s reaction there so the misadventures while rescuing her um Scorn happens to cast a few spells that caught her in her wake just one just one I was trying to get her out of the shackles and it didn work it just didn work Very sad And then when they brought her out of the temple, she thanked them after trying to get the staff that they had retrieved from the necromancer. Seeing that she couldn’t get anything from them, she decided to trounce off into a portal to who knows where. she said she was going to crooked crossroads but she is not a reliable person yeah i don’t think so man and she cut off the head of the necromancer as well yeah yep because we did we did agree to be like okay fine you could keep the money from this job right or oh no yeah she keeps the money for killing the necromancer we are getting the money for cleansing the temple right yes okay Okay, gotcha. Because she was hunting the guy. So, yes. So she says, yeah. Yeah, but speaking of that, I mean, weren’t we told that we could get paid here if we find, like, the connecting taverns or whatever? I feel like we should probably get that done and out of the way. You can. Nice.
Scorn, would you happen to know where that is? Like, where’s the old watering hole where quests and stuff are reversed? Because we’re waiting for some payday, man. We’re getting payday for that temple, for the horse thing. I mean… Okay, does Scorn know where that is, or does he need to roll for it? Or is it just… Roll to see if you remember, because you weren’t an adventurer when you were in town. Yeah, so that’d be an it roll? Yes. Yeah, let me help you think. There you go. Do we see any bystanders you buying at all We could probably ask the questions of you don but there are many signs from the inside of shops indicating that they are open got you what’s the what’s the shops nearest to us like what type of shops are they the shops nearest to you are selling goods for fishing That’s a bit of a sore subject at the moment. Yeah, it’s a little bit of a sore subject, but we might go in here and ask them for help. Perhaps. Yeah, let’s go ahead and head in here. You enter into the shop, and you see a crooked old man staring at you. What do you need to buy? Bait? Tackle? Go ahead We mainly need directions We just got into town And this accursed fog Has us a bit confused Alright, alright, so the water’s that way He points towards out the door You walked out The center of town the other way Um That I don think that what my friend meant We looking for the tavern the local tavern of this town We’re here, we’re sort of submitting some quests that we were given. Oh, the quests! You’re looking for the Adventurer’s Tavern. Yes, yes, that’s exactly what we’re looking for. That would be the one. well the adventurer’s tavern isn’t exactly a reputable place if you get what I mean I mean that sounds about right it sounds like that tracks it’s mostly filled by those scoundrels from the crooked crossroads yeah where would you say they are yeah scoundrels clear our throats Yeah, those guys are just no good, huh? No. Well, do you know where it is? We’re still looking for it. Yes. He begins pulling out a piece of paper and scribbling lines on it. And eventually you can see he has drawn a vague map leading towards the edge of town Now adventurers generally aren advised to spend much time in the center of town so we made sure that the tavern out on the edge of town Why is that? Oh, you know people from the crossroads. They’re scoundrels. You don’t want those around decent folk. Of course not. But if you’re looking to hire scoundrels, that’s the place to go. You guys don’t realize that you guys are adventurers. Very good, sir. Very good, sir. And I’m not saying a word about that. You know what? Yeah, it’s terrible to have your town filled with unkind folk. Yes, keep them far away. This guy’s giving like small town vibe that like got a little like a colored family moved in next door. He’s like, he’s not happy. Oh no. Um. ULTRAK’s gonna ask the guy, do you have any orange?
ornaments in your store. Ornaments? Fishing-based ornaments. What sort of ornamentation are you looking for? Something that would look nice on a tabletop or a countertop or a wall. I mean, he probably has some nice lores that, like, are nice-looking. I got bait and tackle. You want souvenirs, you should go to another shop. Yeah. All right. I mean, how much for like a fishing rod? Do you have like any cool fishing rods? Oh, I got the best fishing rods. I look around and none of them stand out and most of them seem pretty shoddy. We could probably go to the tavern, handle our own thing, and then maybe later tonight see if this guy is actually having a little intruder. Maybe. I don’t know. But I take the drawn map from the table and I say, all right, well, we best be going. We do have some business to attend to, but if anything happens, we’ll be back. You see bits of light peeking out of many small windows. and from inside you hear many raucous voices some of them bragging some of them begging and some of them trying to sell something fun um what type of doors are these i really have to know just a normal hinged door you just pull it open Damn it I wanted to do a saloon entrance Um, alright guys, the place seems a little shady, but I hold the door open for my crew. What? This is exactly what we’re looking for. What are you, mad? That place is probably insane in this type of town. But yeah, we head in to the tavern. Heading into the tavern, you see many, many, many unfamiliar faces. Some of them drunk, and some of them almost half-sober. Well, there’s a cure for that. As you look around… Depends on what outcome you want. On one far end of the tavern, you see a job board and three disgruntled old men sitting behind a table accepting quest returns. Gotcha. Alright. How did we show proof that we did this thing? Can we say that… Aldrich’s been collecting skulls of our victims. Oh yeah, you’re right, but like… For you to wait… Aldrich, do you have the skull of the
roll like that’s a big skull he does do i i thought you i thought you kept it uh maybe i imagined that i think so you know what aldrich let’s go ahead and let’s go ahead and let’s go ahead and say yeah he’s just looking at skulls let’s say that aldrich cat grabbed a piece of something from each of our things so aldrich pick something that you would have kept to show that we’ve gotten the job done from the bridge, from the horse stable, and from the temple we just left. Well, Aldrich will start to take over. Now, we thought that was a ghost. Turns out it was a troll, and he was not an ordinary troll. He was invisible. Yeah, there was a spellbook. Right. I haven’t really been using it. Well, that’s only a terrifying encounter. He’s apparently learned some wizard spells. Wizard spells? Yes. Not normal. Not the sort of thing you normally see a troll do, but I don’t judge. Yeah it hard to judge a troll you know They don like it Let see here That one was for looks like 500 gold Like all of us? Yes. Okay. Alright, that’s 500 gold. Let’s go ahead and give him the rest of our jobs. Yes, and there was a temple in need of cleansing. Okay, you cleansed the temple. or did you meet up with Stalin? Yes, we did. He was busying himself with the business of reconsecrating it when we left. Here’s the skull from the temple. That’s good to hear. Did he get his ass handed to him? It did not go well for him, but he lived, yes. You know, it’s lucky that we were with him. Yeah, we totally didn’t almost get him killed by not killing those things fast enough. We totally didn’t almost get him killed. What’s a near thing? Yes, he is alive and well. Alive and well? Well, that is news. Oh, does that mean we get paid less?
No, you get paid the same. Oh, okay, good, good. It doesn’t seem like Thalen has a lot of fans. For a minute I had the strange impression you didn’t like him very much. So how much was that job for? That one was for $4.50. Okay. Well, you see, liking Thalen is somewhat of a mental illness once you get to know him. we have been a great many liking that man is not really a good sign of character well that’s why he’s not with us anymore not like he’s dead but he’s he’s doing his own thing now now his followers they’re usually okay but him himself he is uh we put it on the board one time. We had to meet up with someone had to meet up with him for a quest to deliver something and we just said find the most self-righteous bastard in town and they had no problem. Yes that would be him I wish we had that job That would have been Have you heard of a person called Rose Thorne? Rose Thorne, yes. She comes through here and does jobs occasionally. Yeah, we were able to… We came across her when we were at that temple. You can’t really trust a thing she says, but she does good work. And if you ever need someone cursed, She’s the one to ask. Oh. Make sure you have enough to pay her, or you might end up cursed, too. Hmm. What kind of curse does she put on people? Oh, she puts all kinds of curses on people. One time, she turned a man’s hair pink. Oh, that sounds adorable. That’s like my hair color. Blueberry’s like, really? She took a man, and she split all of his fingers down the middle. and had them grow into new fingers. So he had ten fingers on each hand. Oh, that sounds awful. Yes, it was terrible. I’ll make a point of not annoying her. Yeah, I feel like she… Anymore. She probably would cause us more harm than good Yeah she has a good heart though Yeah but just make sure you don deserve it because she won hold back if you do Rose Thorne has a good heart? This man works at that stable. starts prodding Tom as you prod Tom you notice that he is about a third of the way through his fourth drink I said come this way come and say hi to these guys over here Tom looks up wipes the foam off of his mustache and says why hello I am learning of the joys of life And finishes his mug. Tell them what we did, Tom. What did we do? Yes, he points at Aldrich. He burned down my stable. Wait, wait, wait. Wait, cut, cut. Before that. Well, it wasn’t like we got his consent. Yeah, you asked us to, didn’t we? Oh yeah, I told you to. I told you to burn it down. You did a good job. What I was meaning was, wasn’t there a horse or something? Do you remember? Tom, do you remember the horse? Oh yes, that white terror. Wretched thing. Showed up and stole all my horses and then their spirits kept running through the woods. And we dealt with it, didn’t we? You see, they come from the insane hunger of a vampire. When it can’t be satiated, it starts to spread. And so, if you become infected from that vampire, you won’t change. Normally, you’ll turn into one of these ghouls. And unlike the vampire, they crave all flesh. They’re fierce creatures driven only by hunger. Mindless.
